Nagqu Horse Racing Festival Tour - 8 Days
Itinerary
Day 1: Airport/Train station transfer to Lhasa
Upon arrival you will be met by our staff and transferred to the hotel. The rest of the day at own leisure to acclimatize yourselves to the high altitude at 3658m (12001ft).
Overnight in Lhasa
Day 2: Visit Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple and Barkhor Street
Early morning see the Potala Place, built in the 7th century by 33rd King Songtsan Gampo, which served as the former administrative office of the Tibetan Kingdom until last Langthar Ma. Next to visit is the Jokhang Temple and Barkhor Street. The Jokhang Temple was founded in the 7th century by King Sogtsan Gampo’s Chinese wife, Wenchen, who donated the Jowo Buddha statue to Tibet as her gift.
Overnight in Lhasa
Day 3: Visit Drepung Monastery/Sera Monastery
In the morning go to visit Drepung monastery which is situated at the foothill of a mountain and was founded by Jamyang Choeje in 1416. It was once home of 10000 monks and Ganden Podrang in Drepung is famous for it was the administrative centre during fifth Dalai Lama and later moved to the famous Potala palace. After lunch, continue to visit the Sera Monastery, which was founded in 1419 by Tsongkapa's disciple Jamchen Choeje. The most attractive is the debating held in the courtyard.

Day 4: Lhasa to Nagqu by train (4hrs)
En-route to Nagqu will be a great experience by board in the highest train in the world. You will have immense feelings to see the huge mountains and the grassland with the locals habitat as a nomad and their Yaks, sheep and horses.

Day 5-6: Enjoy Nagqu Horse Racing Festival
In the two days, you will get to experience the Nagqu Horse Racing Festival, where you will be entertained along with local Tibetans for the whole day. The very typical festival in Northern Tibet could be traced back to the 8 century when Gar Family was in power ruling Tibet on behalf of the Kings of Tibet Tubo dynasty. This festival always happens on August every year. In the days, such games as horse racing, yak racing, wrestling, stone lifting, riffle/arrow shooting on horse back, and talk - show, show of the art of horse riding will be held.
Overnight in Nagqu
Day 7: Nagqu to Lhasa by Train (4 hrs)
Take a train back to Lhasa. You will arrive in Lhasa in early afternoon. The rest time is free for you to enjoy local Tibetan food, watch traditional singing and dancing or just walk around in Lhasa city.

Day 8: Departure from Lhasa
Transfer to Airport. Fly sweet home.

The Nagqu horse race festival is the most interesting and grandest festival in northern Tibet. This festival is celebrated in August each year according to Tibetan calender. There has alot different games like horse racing, yak racing, weight-lifting, dancing and singing etc. Tents of every kind and color make it more charming being a so soulful traditional spirit ever!!!
