Saga Dawa Festival
Day 01 (May 16) Airport/Train station to Lhasa
Upon arrival you will be met by our staff and transferred to the hotel. The rest of the day at own leisure to acclimatize yourselves to the high altitude at 3658 m (12001 ft).
Day 02 (May 17) Lhasa sightseeing - Potala Palace/Jokhang Temple/Barkhor street
In the morning, go to visit the famous Potala palace which is built in 7th century and explore the grandest of this myriad chapels, you will experience its audience halls, the jeweled and Golden burial chortens (stupa Tombs) of past Dalai Lamas, and tremendous number of Buddhist frescoes, thangkas, combinations of mandala, etc. Tibet Museum is an important window to introduce the glorious culture of Tibet, as a free Museum in Lhasa, you should not miss it. In the afternoon, pay a visit to the holist temple in Tibet, the Johkang Temple, built during Songtsen Gonpo's reign by princess Wencheng of Tang Dynasty, 647 A.D, and its famous Barkor Kora, where you can buy or appreciate traditional Tibetan artifacts, religious implements, antiques, books, Tibetan music instrument, Thangkas, and tradition tibetan clothes etc.Overnight in Lhasa
Day 03 (May 18) Lhasa Sightseeing - Drepung Monastery/Sera Monastery
After breakfast, go to vist Drepung monastery, which is situated at the foothill of a mountain and was founded by Jamyang Choeje in 1416. It was once the home of 10000 monks and Ganden podrang in Drepung is famous for it was the government centre during fifth Dalai lama and later moved to the famous potala palace. After having lunch, continue to visit the Sera Monastery, which was founded in 1419 by Tsongkapa's disciple Jamchen Choeje. The most attractive is its Buddhist Scriptures debating held in the courtyard.Overnight in Lhasa
Day 04 (May 19) Lhasa-Yamdrotso lake-Gyangtse
In the morning set out for Gyangtse which is a cultural city of central Tibet. En-route, we will see Yardrok Youtso lake. The crocodile-shaped lake is one of the four holy lakes in Tibet located just up right of Kamlala pass (3975m). And more on, we will see Karola Glacier roadside at 4960m. The most important attraction for today is Yamdro-tso Lake, and Kubum monastery in Gyantse. Yamdro-tso Lake is shaped like coiling scorpion with deep blue in colour and Kubum monastery has a 35m-high chorten (stupa) with its white layers trimmed with decorative stripes and its crown-like golden dome.Overnight in Gyangtse
Day 05 (May 20) Gyantse/Shigatse/Sakya
Drive from Gyantse to Shigatse in the morning. In Shigatse, you will visit the famous Tashi Lhunpo monastery where you can see the well preserved largest statue of Jampa (future god) in the world. The monastery itself is abiding place for the successive Penchen Lamas. Then drive to the Sakya county where you can visit the famous Sakya monastery. The most interesting thing in Sakya sect is that the sect do not believe in reincarnation and the head of Sakya sect will wear white cassock and also marry and have children.Then take a good rest in Sakya.Overnight in SakyaDay 06 (May 21) Sakya-Rongbuk Monastery
There is about 5-6 hours driving from Sakya to Rongpuk. The road is under construction. From Tingri to E.B.C with the very rough road, pass the wild grassland, cross the rapids river and high mountains. If it is in clear whether, you can have a glimpse of 4 mountains which are 8000m high or more, that is, Mt. Lhotse (8516m), Mt. Everes (8848m), Mt. Qowowuyag (8201m) and Mt Mayalu (8463m).Overnight in Ronguk Guest House or Tent
Day 07 (May 22) Rongphu Monastery-Everest Base Camp-Saga
Early in the moring to see the sunrise from Rongphu, then to view Mt. Everest. The scenery is fabulous and splendid. After walking, arrive the place to get on the local bus then use half of an hour to arrive at Everest Base camp (Or you also can trekking to Base Camp around 1.5-2 hours one way. It's more interesting and much warmer, but hard to breath). Hike up to the top of the photo point to take pictures of the splendid Mt. Everest. Then in the afternoon go down from EBC and drive to Saga. The road condition worsen from old Tingri and it runs parallel to the Himalayan ranges. Leaving the Bum-Chu basin, it then descends into the depression of Peiku-tso (4600m), a cobalt blue lake.Overnight in Saga
Day 08 (May 23) Move from Saga to Lake Manasarovar (500km)
Then you are moving towards the Drongpa county, the region around the sources of Brahmaputra river, which is about 167km from the Saga town. Then you will reach a tiny and dusty town on the main road, with a couple of basic guest houses, restaurants and a small monastery called "Old Drongpa". Around the monastery you can see a pile of yak heads carved with "sutras" and "mantras" like "OM MA NI PAD MEY HUM" that is mantra of god of compassion. And new Drongpa is a small town with a couple of shops, hotels and restaurants. It is about 25km apart from the Old Drongpa. Then move towards the Baryang with 4750m above sea level and then drive to Lake Manasarovar.Camp by the lake
Day 09 (May 24) Spend a day around Manasarovar lake, then to Darchen
You can relax around the lake shore and experience the natural beauty of the lake. In the summer time, flocks of swans will gather on the lake, bringing grace and life to the area. You can also see so many Tibetans and Hindus praying and circuling around the lake shore for the whole day, snow capped mountains on the background and hundreds of swans gathering on the lake, attracting hundreds and thousands of tourists from all over the world. In the afternoon, you will reach Tarchen.Overnight in Darchen
Day 10 (May 25) Enjoy Saga Dawa Festival, Trek to Drirapuk (Outer circuit) - 11km
There will be a traditional ceremony for Saga Dawa in the morning at Darpoche, the start point of Kailash Kora. Tibetans hang their prayer flags on the vertical prayer flag pole before it erected. Lamas circulate around the erected vertical prayer flag by reciting special prayer. After finished the cermony local people will do the kora. Actually, Kailash Kora (see the map) begins in Darchen. You go along an easy path to the 1st Prostration Point. Choku Gompa is the place where Buddha Shakyamuni left his imprints. Opposite to Choku Gompa is the Assembly of 500 Arahats - the spot where, according to tradition, Buddha Sakyamuni prayed and meditated in front of Mount Kailash. The gradually ascending path, flanked by rocks on both sides, named after Buddhist deities, takes you to Drirephuk Gompa. Although the terrain is easy, the high altitude makes it difficult for Western hikers to walk at ease.
Day 11 (May 26) Trek to Dzultripuk - 15km
This is the toughest section of your trek around Kailash, climbing from Drirephuk Gompa at 5000m to Dolma La Pass at 5630m. The atmospheric pressure is one-half that of sea level. It is recommended to slow down to 3-5 steps and take deep breaths (only 50% of oxygen) rather than collapse somewhere along the way. Drolma La Pass is a holy place where lamas perform bardo rituals and people symbolically leave behind pieces of their hair, nails, hats, clothes...and hang up prayer flags and burn incense. Then you start descending into a long valley that takes you to Zutruphuk Gompa, where Milarepa's cave is situated. Milarepa is Tibet's most beloved yogi - it is pure , pure delight to immerse oneself in meditation inside this cave. Don't forget to learn Milarepa's mantra - Je mila zhe pa dorje la sol ba dep so! - you'll love it there even more.
Day 12 (May 27) Trek to Darchen - 10km
The last section is fairly easy walking from Zutruphuk Gompa to Darchen. The Kailash pilgrimage officially ends at Dakini Dancing Ground, with a fantastic view of Lake Manasarovar in the background.Overnight in Darchen
Days 13-14 (June 28 - 29) Drive from Darchen to Zhangmu
Crossing the grasslands, come back down east to Saga. Then cross one of the most spectacular mountain passes, topped with prayer flags and wind- driven prayer wheels. You will truly feel like you are on top of the world.Overnight in Zhangmu
Day 15 (June 30) Zhangmu to Kathmandu
It takes about 5 hours to complete 130km rough asphalt road from Zhangmu to Kathmandu. Your Tibetan tour guide will see you off at the Chinese Border, and your Nepalese tour guide will take care of your Nepal tour continually.Overnight in Kathmandu
